I can’t stop thinking about what Gray said. It’s been hovering in the back of my mind for the last hundred miles. I haven’t really allowed myself to think about what’s happening. Even in those moments of physical quiet while my brother and I waited on them, my mind was busy, too loud to let anything else in.

But I don’t have that same luxury right now.

He’s planted the seed and the last three hours of quiet have watered it endlessly.

I can’t stop picturing some sort of post-apocalyptic hell on earth where Amelia gets stuck in a terrible life.

Could I do it? Could I essentially sacrifice my brother for her?

I glance at her through the rearview mirror, trace the long line of her neck when she tips her head back and giggles quietly. I watch the way her nose scrunches up when she’s suppressing a laugh.

I think I could.

My brother snatched my chance with her before, but this time is different. The time and space between all of us was wiped out the moment the mountain fell. I’ve been given another opportunity, and I won’t take it for granted.

“Eyes on the road.” Cole’s voice is sharp, low enough for my ears only.

I tighten my grip on the steering wheel and force myself not to look in the rearview mirror. Again. I don’t bother defending myself, but I won’t take all the blame. Those two in the backseat are fucking distracting.

“Do they need to sit so close to each other? And what could they possibly be talking about for the last two hours?”

I don’t need to turn my head to know he’s frustrated. I ignore the heat of his gaze on the side of my face. He’s not the only one frustrated. I’ll be damned if someone slinks in there and steals her out from under my nose—a-fucking-gain—brother or not.

“Why am I the one stuck driving,” I grumble.

“Why don’t you pull onto the next shoulder that’s dry? I don’t mind driving, and I don’t think there’s a rest stop for miles,” Amelia offers.

I close my eyes in a long blink at the honeyed tone of her voice. What I wouldn’t give to have her all to myself in the backseat for hours while someone else drove us to safety.

“Nah, I’m good, Ames. The sky looks like it’s getting dark, so I don’t want to stop unless we absolutely have to.”

She leans forward between the two front seats. “I really don’t mind, West.”

I chance a glance at her. “You can take the next shift, yeah?”

She squeezes my shoulder before she sits back in her seat. “Alright. Let me know if you change your mind.”

I nod and alternate keeping an eye on the traffic around us and the sky. I wasn’t exaggerating. Storm clouds gather up ahead, and it’s windy enough that you can see the clouds flying through the sky.

The closer we get to California, the more traffic there is. It’s not surprising, there’s really only one main road that’s a straight shot from Nevada to the California coast.
